Humans are creatures of habit. Even when we welcome it, change takes more energy. So, it isn’t surprising that children may find it difficult to make transitions between activities, places and fun toys/activities. Being asked to stop one thing and start another is a very common trigger for challenging behavior.
A few tips to help keep transitions flowing smoothly:
· Provide at least a 5-minute warning that there will be a change
· Use visuals to show the children what is coming up next
· Use a visual schedule to show the children the planned activities for the day
· Sing songs as you transition
The more a child can predict and participate in the schedule and activities of the day, the less likely it is that challenging behavior will occur.
